But the words sounded different inside that courtroom.
Darlene had used them to frighten me. Now they were being examined as evidence of pressure surrounding a serious crime.
The judge ordered Brent and Kyle held pending further proceedings, citing the severity of the allegations and concerns about safety and interference.
It was not a verdict.
It was not the end.
But they were not walking out with their mother.
Outside the courtroom, reporters gathered around Wade. He attempted to read a prepared statement about his family’s commitment to the community.
A reporter interrupted him.
“Mr. Ror, are you also being investigated over county construction contracts?”
Wade stopped reading.
His attorney guided him toward the exit.
I did not feel triumphant.
I felt tired.
Then I heard my name.
“Caroline.”
Ethan stood near the hallway windows. He looked thinner than the last time I had seen him.
“Can we talk?”
Patricia remained beside me.
“You can speak here,” I said.
He glanced at her.
“Privately?”
“No.”
He rubbed his face.
“I never wanted any of this.”
I looked at him.
“Did you know Brent was angry with Lucy?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he planned to confront her?”
Ethan hesitated.
“I knew he wanted to talk to her.”
“And you told him she was going to call me.”
Ethan looked down.
“Dad said they would handle it.”
Something inside me finally became still.
“You knew she might be in danger,” I said. “And you chose them.”
He opened his mouth, then closed it.
I walked away.
That evening, I returned to Helen’s house.
Lucy was sitting on the couch with her injured leg supported by pillows. Biscuit lay beside her, snoring loudly.
“How was court?” she asked.
“Difficult.”
“Are they still in jail?”
“Yes.”
She nodded and pointed toward my purse.
“Did you read my note?”
I had forgotten.
I removed the folded paper and opened it.
In Lucy’s careful handwriting were six words:
I want to feel safe again.
I sat beside her.
“You will,” I said.
She leaned against my shoulder.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, “Mom, there’s something I didn’t tell the detective.”
I turned toward her.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
She stared at her hands.
“It’s about Dad.”
I waited.
She took a shaky breath.
“I think I’m ready to tell you the part I was afraid to say.”
Biscuit remained asleep against her good leg. The television played quietly, but neither of us was watching.
I reached for the remote and turned it off.
“I’m listening.”
Lucy swallowed.
“Before Grandma took me to that house, Dad told me Uncle Brent was angry.”
I waited.
“He said I shouldn’t have listened to grown-up conversations.”
“What else did he say?”
Lucy rubbed the edge of her blanket.
“He told me to apologize. He said if I made trouble for Grandpa, everybody would blame me.”
My chest tightened.
“Did he know they were going to hurt you?”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
That answer mattered.
I did not want to place words in her mouth, even words part of me desperately wanted to hear.
“Why didn’t you tell Detective Salazar?”
Her eyes filled.
„Lucy, schau mich an.“
