„Mama sagt, du stellst dich schwierig an. Komm einfach und unterschreib die Unterlagen.“
Ich habe eine Antwort getippt.
„Welche Unterlagen?“
Ihre Antwort kam fast umgehend.
„Routinemäßige Refinanzierungssachen.“
Ich habe mir die gefälschte Unterschrift angesehen.
„Warum sollte ich etwas Routinemäßiges unterschreiben?“
„Weil du beim Haus geholfen hast. Fang jetzt nicht an, mich auszufragen.“
Wurde bereits etwas unter meinem Namen eingereicht?
Die Schreibanzeige erschien.
Dann verschwand er.
Eine Minute verging.
Noch eine Minute.
Schließlich antwortete sie.
„Ruf Mama an.“
When he returned, his voice was noticeably more formal.
“Ms. Brooks, I can confirm that a document was uploaded to your account.”
“Who uploaded it?”
“I don’t have permission to identify the submitting party from this screen.”
“Was it accepted?”
“It appears connected to a pending transaction.”
“What transaction?”
“I recommend speaking directly with our fraud department.”
“Please transfer me.”
He did.
The next representative asked whether I had signed a subordination or release agreement.
“No.”
“Did you authorize someone to sign on your behalf?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Do you recognize the notary?”
“No.”
She explained that the company would open a formal dispute and preserve the available records.
I received a reference number.
She also warned me not to rely on a telephone complaint alone.
“Submit a written statement and contact an attorney immediately.”
“I have an appointment this afternoon.”
“Good. And please don’t alter any original documents.”
I thanked her.
Afterward, I stood beside the window and watched pedestrians move along the icy sidewalk.
People carried grocery bags and coffee cups.
A delivery driver struggled with a package outside the building across the street.
The world continued normally.
Inside my apartment, I had just discovered that my own family might have forged my name on legal paperwork.
A new text arrived from my father.
“Please don’t call anyone about the house until we explain.”
I looked at the message.
Then I wrote back.
“Dad, did you know somebody signed my name?”
His response took nearly five minutes.
“We need to talk.”
I felt something inside me harden.
That wasn’t a denial.
I set my phone down and gathered my documents.
The original agreement went into one folder.
The newly discovered packet went into another.
Bank statements, payment confirmations, and screenshots went into a third.
Before leaving, I checked my credit reports.
There were no obvious new accounts yet.
That offered temporary relief, but it didn’t answer the questions surrounding the property.
I activated available credit monitoring and preserved copies of the reports.
Then I called my manager.
I told her I was dealing with a serious family financial matter and needed another day away from work.
She approved the request without demanding details.
Her kindness nearly made me cry.
I had spent so long expecting every favor to carry a price.
At noon, someone knocked on my apartment door.
I wasn’t expecting anyone.
Through the peephole, I saw Desiree standing in the hallway.
Alana stood beside her, wearing a pink winter coat.
My sister held a large envelope.
I didn’t open the door immediately.
“Whitney, I know you’re home.”
“What do you want?”
“We need to talk.”
“Email me.”
“Don’t be childish.”
I looked at Alana.
She stared at the floor.
Desiree raised her voice.
“Your niece wants to apologize.”
I hesitated.
Then I opened the door with the security chain still attached.
Alana looked up.
“Hi, Aunt Whitney.”
“Hello, sweetheart.”
She twisted the sleeve of her coat.
“I’m sorry about breakfast.”
„Danke, dass Sie das gesagt haben.“
